Another story in the Time Capsule series, immerse yourself in Proposition 8 protests from November 2008 with this story, a photo slideshow and an audio file recorded from a march in West Los Angeles.  UPDATE: The California Supreme Court has until early June 2009 to rule on whether to uphold the constitutional ban on same-sex marriage.  Some news reports hold that the court is leaning toward upholding the ban.

Hundreds of people demonstrated around the Los Angeles California Mormon Temple on Nov. 6 to protest the state’s passage of Proposition 8. The protest and march around Los Angeles (in the slide show you will hear the moments leading up to the march) wreaked havoc on Southern California’s rush hour traffic and continued for hours. Activists like Jane Gould and Nick Small (pictured below) made phone calls in the weeks leading up to Election Day.

Time Capsule: Tzu Chi and the Freeway Complex Fire

As with the previous two entries on this blog, I’m reposting a few stories I wrote last semester for USC graduate journalism classes.  In this story originally written in late November 2008, we explore what role the Tzu Chi Foundation had in helping those affected by the Freeway Complex Fire.  Just what is the Tzu Chi Foundation anyway?

Almost a week after the Freeway Complex Fire swept through Orange County, the local assistance center at the East Anaheim Gymnasium was still filled with agencies looking to help those affected by the fire.  Although traffic from fire victims at the gym had declined by November 20, that Thursday marked the first day the Federal Emergency Management Agency was on hand to help those in need.

Time Capsule: The Marek Fire was like a Dream

Dortha Jones Vestal thought she was dreaming when her son told her before dawn on Monday, Oct. 13 they had to evacuate from their Lake View Terrace home because of the Marek Fire.

Vestal says her son woke her up and said, “Mommy, one of the neighbors just called and said you guys are surrounded by fire.”
